Kuala Lumpur
At The British International School of Kuala Lumpur (BSKL), each of the four School Houses (Normans, Saxons, Vikings and Romans) has a charity which they support, including a refugee school, orphanage, centre for the disabled and an animal sanctuary. Pupils raise money throughout the year by organising and participating in various projects and events.
Norman's charity:
The Norman’s charity is Beautiful Gate, a centre for physically handicapped children and adults. The first Beautiful Gate centre was established in Petaling Jaya to provide accommodation, training and various services to the disabled in need. That is regardless of their religions, races and status. After 10 years of hard work, Beautiful Gate centres across Malaysia were recognized by the government and registered as the Beautiful Gate Foundation for the disabled in 2003.
Saxon's charity:
The Saxons Charity is the Furry Friends Farm. It is an animal sanctuary for rescued stray dogs, puppies, cats and kittens and other companion (pet) animals that are abandoned, neglected or abused by irresponsible owners. It is run and managed by volunteer rescuers with the objective of creating a more compassionate and humane society towards animals.
Viking's charity:
The Vikings' charity is the Lautu Education Center, a Burmese refugee school located in town to provide education to the refugee children. It is a part of the Malaysia Lautu Christian Fellowship, supported by the UN. Refugee children do not have the right to attend school in Malaysia, therefore this center is a lifeline for many of the young and vulnerable children.
Roman's charity:
The charity for Romans House is the Trinity Children's Centre. This is an orphanage in KL, supported and run by the church, which shelters and educates neglected, abused or abandoned children. It relies heavily on volunteers to help teach, cook, garden and play with the children and donations of toys, stationary, food and money.
In addition to this, BSKL also hosts whole-school charity days, whether it be a disaster-fund lunch, christmas present giving or a dress-up day, raising money and donations for various organisations.
